A good bedtime routine for baby.
By Kristina Porter
Many parents complain that their babies don't sleep through the night. They are always tired, worn down and frustrated. I am sure their child is too. The problem and solution are so simple most of the time and go hand in hand. YOU NEED A BEDTIME ROUTINE!!! Babies need a lot of sleep but they don't have the same sleep pattern that adults do. They are power nappers. And the amounts of sleep they need vary by age so their sleep routine should adjust to fit their needs. newborn-6 months These babies require 12-18hrs of sleep a day. A newborn baby will sleep about two hours and then stay awake for an hour for the first month. They kind of doze the first weeks away growing at a rapid pace. The second month they start to stay awake a little longer reducing their sleep frequency from 8-9 naps a day to 4-5 2 hr naps. Mom and dad usually can start to sleep at night with alternating shifts. Months 3-5 is a breeze after that. The baby now sleeps a whole 6hrs at night and takes at least three 2 hour naps during the day. By six months old your baby should sleep atleast 8-10 hours at night and take atleast 2 naps during the day accumlating to 3 hrs of nap time. At six months you want to start a sleep schedule. Start by getting your baby ready for bed at 6pm. Play with them actively all day if you want but when 6pm hits it is time to help them wind down. Start by doing relaxing games like reading or tummy time. Feed your baby and then give them a nice warm bath. Johnson and Johnson makes a great nitetime bath collection that relaxes baby with aromatherapy. Put your baby in nice warm pj's. A warm baby sleeps better. At 7pm. give them their lovey, pacifier or bottle. Gently rock or sing them to sleep. It may take an hour or two. You won't get immediate results the first night. But if you do this for a week, I can almost guarantee a good night's rest. REMEMBER, Babies wake up early and full of energy. Your 6am is like 10am to a baby so if you put them to bed at 7 and they fall asleep by 8pm. You can look forward to your little one waking by 6am. Great news is, it's a fantastic start to a daytime routine. 6am-7am Wake and play 7am-8am Breakfast 8am-9am Bath and morning nap 10am-11am More playtime 11am-12pm Exercise (Tummy time or walker) 12pm-1pm Lunch 1pm-2pm Daytime sponge bath 2pm-4pm Afternoon nap 4pm-6pm More playtime 6pm-8pm Bedtime Routine If you are willing to put in a little patience you can have your baby on a great sleep routine and daytime routine, without having them "Cry It Out". Some things with throw your routine off like teething, company, vacations, or sickness. Don't worry. Just try to get back on it as soon as possible. Got a colicky baby? Try putting them in a car seat next to your bed so they can sleep upright. It helps.
